Template sizes and seam allowances for curves
Quick reference for curved piecing techniques, template sizes, and tips for sewing smooth curves.
The most common curved piecing block. Template sizes at standard finished block sizes:
All sizes include 1/4" seam allowance. The quarter circle radius is approximately half the finished block size.
Starch heavily — this is non-negotiable. It adds body and keeps bias edges from stretching as you ease the curve. Use real starch, not smoothing spray. Clip the concave (inner) curve every 1/4" to 1/2" so the fabric can spread. Don't clip the convex (outer) curve — it eases naturally.
Sew slowly with the concave piece on top so you can see your clip marks and control the easing. Pin every 3/4" to 1" perpendicular to the seam, or use fabric glue for a smoother feed. Shorten your stitch length to 1.8mm — it makes the curve smoother and easier to press flat.
Press toward the concave side. If your first blocks pucker, pin more densely and press again — that usually fixes it. Curved acrylic templates are worth the investment for repeatable cuts. The technique is the same whether you're making Drunkard's Path, orange peel, or improv circles.
