Standard precut sizes and block options
Quick reference for standard precut fabric sizes, typical piece counts, and the largest finished block you can get from each (accounting for standard 1/4" seam allowance on each side).
Mini Charm
Great for postage stamp quilts and tiny patchwork. Pair with sashing strips for a quick small quilt.
Charm Pack
The most versatile precut. Works for simple squares, HSTs, four-patches, and disappearing nine-patches.
Layer Cake
Perfect for large blocks, turning triangles, and quick quilts. Sub-cut into charm squares or strips.
Jelly Roll
Ideal for strip quilts, jelly roll races, log cabin blocks, and binding. One roll makes a generous lap quilt.
Honey Bun
Best for narrow strip piecing, string blocks, and accent strips. Creates a delicate, detailed look.
Dessert Roll
Wider strips for rail fence blocks, large strip quilts, or sub-cut into charm squares.
Fat Quarter
The most flexible precut. Cut squares, strips, or shapes in any size up to 17.5" finished. Great for mixing prints.
Fat Eighth
Budget-friendly alternative to fat quarters. Good for scrappy quilts where you want more variety in less yardage.
Jolly Bar
Versatile rectangle precut. Makes brick layouts, large HSTs, or sub-cut into charm squares and smaller pieces.
Turnover
Pre-cut half-square triangles ready to sew. Saves the step of cutting squares diagonally. Pair two for HST blocks.
Don't prewash precuts. The small pieces fray and tangle in the washer, charm squares come out shredded, and jelly roll strips turn into a knotted mess. They're designed to go straight from the package to your cutting mat. If you're concerned about color bleeding, use a color catcher in the first wash of the finished quilt.
Those pinked (zigzag) edges are intentional — they prevent fraying. Don't trim them straight. Sew from the outer edge of the pinking. You may lose up to 1/4" of usable fabric per side compared to a clean-cut piece, so factor that in before assuming a 5" charm square gives you a full 5" to work with.
Charm packs (5") are best for scrappy variety — one piece per print, perfect for 4-1/2" finished squares or small HSTs. Layer cakes (10") give you room to subcut into HSTs, flying geese, or multiple smaller pieces. Jelly rolls (2-1/2" strips) are the workhorse for strip piecing, binding, and any block built from 2-1/2" units. Match the precut format to your block size and you'll save yourself a lot of subcutting.
