Skeins needed based on stitch count
Estimate how many skeins of thread you need for a color based on stitch count, strand count, and fabric count.
Stitch type
Confetti-heavy designs eat more floss than you'd expect — all that starting, stopping, and traveling between scattered stitches adds up fast. Designs with large blocks of one color are more efficient per skein. The calculator accounts for stitch type, fabric count, and strand count so the estimate reflects your actual project, not a generic average.
Buy an extra skein of your most-used colors, especially background fill. Dye lots vary between batches, and you'll only notice the shift when it's side-by-side with your existing stitching. Buy all your skeins at once from the same shop visit to stay in the same lot.
For projects with 20+ colors, wind your floss onto bobbins and label them with the chart symbols. Keep a running tally of skeins used per color so you can reorder early if one's going faster than expected. Backstitch uses less than full crosses — the calculator lets you set stitch type for a tighter estimate.
Save your calculations, log fabric purchases, and see your project through to the gallery.
